The PC Prototype
 
The PC Prototype of Reflection was developed in the Spring of 2008 as part of the CTIN 489 Intermediate Games Course at the University of Southern California, under faculty advisers Tracy Fullerton and Peter Brinson. It was the first version of Reflection and set into place the core mechanics that have guided the design and gameplay of Reflection.









  





The Art
 
 







The art style of the PC Prototype took on an anime look early on, with the creators being very fond of Japanese anime and manga. Additionally, they wanted to bring out the character's personalities through their emotions, something that the anime art style lent itself favorably towards.























The Music
 
 
The PC Prototype of Reflection takes place in an icy, crystal cavern. The premise revolved around the concepts of exploration and discovery, and as such the music heard in this version are much more ambient and calming compared to future tracks.
























The Development











Reflection began as an 'ideation' assignment, in which co-creators Keith Co and Jeremy Jung had to come up with 3 ideas and present them to the class, who would provide feedback and vote on the idea.

Ideation 1: String Theory

The first idea was 'String Theory', a variation on Lemmings in which players manipulate the environment instead of the lemmings themselves. For example, a certain section of the level would have zero gravity, and players could extend this zero gravity zone in order to get as many lemmings to the goal as possible. The two of them were extremely excited by the idea and going in, were confident that this would the project that they would be working on for the course.

 
Ideation 2: Laser Maze

The second idea and third ideas actually originated from a discussion about an ability in World of Warcraft known as 'spell reflect', in which players can reflect certain attack spells back to the caster. From there, Jeremy came up with the idea of a laser maze, a puzzle game in which players would have to set up mirrors and objects to direct a light beam to the goal.

Ideation 3: Reflection

The idea for Reflection came about as the co-creators continued thinking about the World of Warcraft spell reflect and laser maze idea. When presenting the three ideas to their peers, the unanimous vote was for Reflection, to the surprise of Keith and Jeremy who had thought that String Theory would've been the popular choice.

The Story

A young explorer (Kagami) happens upon a giant crystal and, looking around, discovers and entrance and goes inside. As she ventures deeper she discovers that her reflection is not what it seems.
At the center of the cavern Kagami looks to help a mysterious voice that has been calling to her, unknowingly releasing a powerful being (Cascade).
 
The Council, having heard news of Cascade's release, agrees to send Nishith, their strongest guardian, but one who's internal turmoil makes him unstable.
